Meet Your Psychologist

Dr. Taylor Stearns
Founder and Licensed Clinical Psychologist at The Current Method
Hi, I’m Taylor Stearns, Psy.D., a licensed psychologist in California. My therapy style is straightforward and supportive. I’m not the “smile and nod” type of therapist—I believe growth comes from honest conversations, clear feedback, and a willingness to be challenged. At the same time, I bring humor, warmth, and a down-to earth approach to our work together. Clients often tell me they feel both pushed and supported, which is exactly the balance I aim for.
Professionally, I’ve trained and worked in APA-accredited programs, including intensive clinical training at Kaiser Permanente Northern California. Since then, I’ve started my private practice in 2022 that is focused on helping adults navigate anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, and burnout. My work is grounded in evidence-based therapies like CBT, ACT, and EMDR, and my goal is always to make therapy practical, actionable, and sustainable.
As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, I care deeply about creating an affirming and empowering space for clients. I understand both the unique challenges and the strengths that come with LGBTQIA+ identity, and I bring that personal perspective into my clinical work. Outside of work, you’ll usually find me outside, spending time with my friends, family, and my dog.

Questions & Answers
Find answers to the most commonly asked questions about my services.
What issues do you work with?
I specialize in treating anxiety, depression, trauma, burnout, and life transitions. I also provide affirming therapy for the LGBTQIA+ community.
Do you work with couples, teens, or children?
At this time, I primarily work with adults (18+).
What is your therapy style like?
I’m a direct therapist. I’m not a blank slate and I’m not just here to nod along while you talk. My role is to help you see what’s getting in the way, challenge you when needed, and give you research-based tools to make lasting changes. Clients who work best with me want honest feedback, humor, and practical strategies they can actually use.
Do you offer online therapy?
Yes. I offer telehealth sessions for clients anywhere in California, as well as in-person sessions at my San Francisco office.
How long will therapy take?
It depends on your goals. Therapy is client-directed. Some people come to me for focused, short-term work—like learning tools for anxiety or managing stress. Others view therapy as a long-term investment in their growth and want ongoing support. We’ll talk about your goals in our consultation and decide together what makes sense for you.
Is therapy with you right for everyone?
No—and that’s okay. Therapy isn’t a one-size-fits-all process, and my approach may not be the right fit for everyone. If you’re looking for a purely non-directive space to vent without feedback, my style may feel too challenging. But if you’re ready to be both supported and pushed toward change, we may be a strong match.
Do you give homework?
Often, yes. Because my approach is behavioral and evidence-based, I’ll suggest strategies or exercises to try between sessions. These aren’t “assignments” in the traditional sense—they’re opportunities to practice skills and notice changes in your real life.
What if I don’t connect with you?
Finding the right therapist is important. If we’re not the right fit, I’ll do my best to provide referrals to other trusted clinicians. My goal is for you to get the support you need, whether that’s with me or elsewhere.
Do you accept insurance?
Yes. I currently accept Lyra Benefits and Aetna Insurance. If you have another provider, I can give you a superbill to submit for out-of-network reimbursement if your plan offers those benefits.
