Neurogenesis and Mental Health: Why the Basics Matter
Neurogenesis—the growth of new neurons—continues throughout adulthood, particularly in the hippocampus. Reduced neurogenesis is associated with depression and anxiety (Schoenfeld & Gould,2012).
Exercise increases BDNF, supporting brain plasticity (van Praag, 2009). Sleep allows consolidation and repair. Nutrition and stress regulation further support brain health.
Therapy and medication work best when layered on top of these behavioral foundations.
